Our Favourite Maths Apps

One of our parents asked us for a list of any iPad apps she could use with her son. We thought this would be something lots of parents might like so here’s our top seven maths apps for KS2. Whilst they’re designed for KS2, many older students, and adults, find them useful for brushing up on their mental maths skills, especially tables!

The following Apps can be found in the Apple App Store by searching for them by name. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are some of our favourite Apps.

Sing your timetables with Percy Parker by Sherston Software Limited Sing your times tables with Percy Parker is an exciting alternative to traditional methods of learning the times tables. Children join in with the charismatic Percy Parker and his band as they sing entertaining, memorable songs about each times table. We love this App! Its humorous and catchy tunes really help engage the student and help them remember their tables. Best used once the student has learnt some of the multiples. £0.69 No
Coop Fractions by eChalk Ltd Learn to ace fractions with this suite of hilarious chicken-themed educational games.This resource is already used in thousands of schools to help children develop methodologies for rapidly solving problems involving fractions. Fun App where students have to convert fractions into decimals in order to catch the eggs. Great for encouraging mental methods and quick thinking. Varying the difficulty level ensures the App is suitable for students in KS2 up to GCSE. Free Yes
Math Hero by Kitty Pad Math Hero HD is a fun and interesting game for children from age 6 to 12 to learn and practice math skills, from basic concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, to more advanced and complicated problem solving such as mixed operator usage. This game requires students to correctly solve maths problems then “slash” the fruit in the shape of the correct number. This game is similar to “Fruit Ninja” which many children are already familiar with.  Children will enjoy the exploding fruit whilst practising the four functions. £0.69 No
Early Birds by Key Stage Fun Times Tables are something every child (or grown-up) has to learn, so why not make the process more fun with Early Birds: Times Tables Training, perfect for 5 to 11 year olds (or even 5 to 111 year olds!)…
Help Ernie the Bird find the eggs with his brothers and sisters in – these are the ones with multiples of your chosen tables set on.
Challenge students to find multiples of any number. The timer encourages children to think quickly and try to beat each other’s or their own time, whilst the penalty for wrong answers encourages accuracy. £0.69 Yes

 

Doodle Maths by EZ Education Ltd A personalised learning system for maths with proven results. You will need this App if your child…
…has lost confidence in maths
…has an important exam coming up, such as SATs or 11+
…would benefit from supplementing the work they do at school to ensure they are always reaching their potential.
This is a great App to use with your kids as it becomes a personalised “program of study”. The cute graphics appeal to children, and it focuses on rewarding students for correct answers, with stars that can be collected. A bit on the expensive side but worth it if you’re after an App that will guide your child through the KS2 curriculum. Free to download. £6.99 to download full version with all features. No

Level up your mathematics skills and become King of Math!
King of Math is a fast-paced mathematics game with lots of fun and diverse problems in different areas. Starting as a male or female farmer, you level up your character by answering math questions and improving your total score. New character design and music for each of the ten levels.
This is a great App to get reluctant learners engaged. The more questions they answer the further they progress their character. There are plenty of rewards to encourage and motivate students. They can choose which function to concentrate on. As this is an American App, expect American spelling and phrases. Free Yes
